Integration of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (“SSNIT”) and National Identification Authority (“NIA”) numbers to Begin on June 28

June 24, 2021

The integration of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (“SSNIT”) and National Identification Authority (“NIA”) numbers is expected to begin on June 28, 2021. This merger makes SSNIT fully compliant with the National Identity Register Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2111) (“L.I 2111). Regulation 7 of L.I 2111 requires the use of the national identity card (“Ghana Card”) as a means of identification for transactions of individuals in respect of pensions.

By this arrangement, new SSNIT members must provide their Ghana Card numbers to enroll onto the SSNIT Scheme, whereas employers and the self-employed can now pay contributions using the NIA numbers. It is hoped that all existing SSNIT members’ numbers will be merged and migrated onto the NIA platform by the end of the year.
